ANKARA - Journalist İlhan Çevik, the founder of the Daily News, died yesterday in an Ankara hospital at the age of 83.
Çevik had undergone an operation for an intestinal disorder Saturday at the Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine Hospital in Ankara. His funeral ceremony will be held today at the Kocatepe Mosque in the capital.
The current editor-in-chief of the Daily News, David Judson, saluted the mission of the newspaper Çevik founded nearly half a century ago, saying that the best way for today’s editorial team to honor the founder’s memory is to redouble its commitment to the vision he articulated on the paper’s very first day. In Çevik’s first editorial, he wrote, "The Daily News will follow a completely impartial course in domestic politics." He went on to say the newspaper’s support of foreign policy would be based on the motto of Turkey’s first president, Mustafa Kemal
Atatürk, "Peace at home, peace in the world."
"Much has changed in the world, in journalism and at the Daily News in the intervening years," Judson said. "But Çevik’s founding principles are as valid today as they were in 1961. We express our condolences to the Çevik family and mourn a great journalist’s passing as we honor the mission of what he created."
His first address
Excerpts of Çevik’s first address to his audience at the Daily News read as follows: To Our Readers: We, who have undertaken to publish the DAILY NEWS in Ankara, hope to meet the strong demand in Turkey for a daily newspaper in the English language. We feel certain that the DAILY NEWS you have before you now [will] excel its predecessors.
Born on Dec. 24, 1926, in Konya, Çevik graduated from Victoria College in London. Çevik began his journalism career in 1942 and published Turkey’s first English-language paper, Daily News, on March 15, 1961. Çevik later turned the newspaper over to Doğan Media Group, or DMG. He is survived by his two children.
