Turkish Parliament Speaker Bulent Arinc hosted a reception at the parliament to celebrate April 23rd. Some of Arinc's guests congratulated Arinc for his speech delivered at the General Assembly yesterday. Arinc had told at the General Assembly that in democracies there can not be secret laws as the 'National Security Political Document'. Arinc also reaffirmed that the state is restraining religious freedoms in Turkey.“We must seek the agreement of the MPs for democracy and not an agreement between various government institutions,” stressed Arinc.
One of the prominent guests at Arinc's reception was Turkish Chief of General Staff Gen. Hilmi Ozkok. In reference to the dismissal order of the Supreme Board of Judges & Prosecutors on Van Prosecutor Ferhat Sarikaya, Ozkok said that the Turkish Armed Forces are not in a position to influence the board. “The decision was made solely by the supreme board. We have no comment on a decision made by the board,” stressed Ozkok.
Public Prosecutor Ferhat Sarikaya had prepared the infamous Semdinli indictment' (incriminating gen. Yasar Buyukanit, Commander of Land Forces and some other top-brass generals) and submitted it to the Court in Van.
Justice Ministry inspectors (who were assigned with the approval of Justice Minister Cemil Cicek) then prepared a report asking Sarikaya to be given disciplinary penalty. The report requesting that Sarikaya be punished with disciplinary penalty in line with Judges & Prosecutors Law was later referred to Higher Board of Judges & Prosecutors for final decision.
The Supreme Board of Judges & Prosecutors dismissed Ferhat Sarikaya from his duty.
