Cuneyt Ulsever: Is Turkey being dragged into instability?

Looking at the recent string of events in our country, I cannot help asking whether a new outfit isn't being prepared for Turkey by outside sources. Against an already chaotic background due to the war in Iraq, and as we head towards the October 3 EU accession talks, there are things which confuse even the calmest of minds: 1) The PKK, which has been "sleeping" since 1999, appears to have been awoken in May 2005, and has been busy since with terror activities.  a) It turns out that Apo, in prison with around 100 charges against him, can write orders to the PKK. b) US forces, which entered into a sort of allied relationship with the Kurds following March 1, refuses to, for this and that reason, touch any of the PKK "nests" in Northern Iraq.  ***** 2) A PM who previously had refused to even recognize a "Kurdish question," now invites a group of intellectuals to Ankara to discuss the issue. For the first time in Turkish history, a Republic of Turkey Prime Minister uses an honorarium in referring to a leader of the PKK group.  a) Only around 600 or 700 people come out to see the PM on his official visit to Kurdish dominated city of Diyarbakir. The PM returns this time to his classic speeches, and refers to the "single union of people" while he is there.  b) While everyone awaits an explanation from the PM, he instead discusses the "plans for the struggle against terror" made in the recent National Security Council meeting.  c) The PKK announces a "period without activity" stretching up until September 20, making it clear that they are waiting on promises from the PM.  ***** 3) The PM starts to use heavy language against the opposition nationalistic party MHP, who have been on the rise in popularity following terror activity by the PKK.  ***** 4) During this period, ideological Islamic activity is on the rise too. Hizb-ut Tahrir launches a protest calling for the return of the Caliphate in Istanbul right in front of the police, but, for some reason, the police let them get away. It is provocation, but nothing is done.  ***** These events, taken together, bring out the following questions:  Is there an attempt afoot to make the PM look incompetent? According to the images we have being put in front of us, the PM is not in charge of the situation. It also appears that both PKK backed and Islamic groups are being tolerated.  On the other hand, there is another question mark in my mind: will the PKK, following the September 20 deadline, launch a deadlier attack on us, this time claiming that the PM did not keep his promises?  Whichever forces there are wanting to shake Turkey up these days, they are very effective!
