ISTANBUL - An international project named "European Literature in Turkey: Turkish Literature in Europe," being carried out by the Foreign Ministry, the Goethe Institute and the European Commission, starts today. The project will continue in 24 Turkish cities and eight European countries through June 22, 2010.

A press conference was held Sunday to launch the project at the German Consulate. Turkish Parliament Speaker Köksal Toptan, German House of Parliament Chairman Norbert Lammert, Hungarian National Assembly Speaker Katalin Szili and German Ambassador to Ankara Eckart Cuntz attended.

"The aim of the project, realized as part of the Cultural Bridges program, is to bring together various cultures in all branches of contemporary arts and artists from these branches," Cuntz said. He said the project would enable the EU countries and Turkey to promote their cultural values mutually.

Mobile library
Claudia Hahn Raabe, director of the German Culture Institute, said a mobile library, provided by Mercedes Benz Türk A.Ş. for the project, would visit the eastern cities of Diyarbakır, Malatya, Gaziantep, Şanlıurfa and Van.

Raabe said 48 renowned contemporary writers, whose works have been previously translated into Turkish, would be the guests of the library. "Also, photographers, filmmakers and musicians will meet art lovers in 24 Turkish cities," she said.

Raabe said there would be literary readings and discussions in two languages throughout the project’s one-week run in each city, adding that the guest writers would be accompanied by a mobile library. "In the European leg of the project, there will be concerts, workshops and exhibitions," said Raabe, adding that locals would be able to learn about developments and renovations in the field of contemporary art.

The project’s "Turkey Tour" will end April 13, 2010, with a special gala to be organized as part of the Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture celebrations. The European leg of the project will start May 4 and end June 22.
