PARIS - Journalist Gökşin Sipahioğlu, founder of the famous SİPA photography agency, gave a conference on photojournalism in Paris on Thursday. The event was organized as part of a photography exhibition at the Maison Europeene de la Photographie. Sipahioğlu's speech was about professional and amateur photography and the establishment of Sipa Press.
"Sipa Press was once among the world’s best agencies. In 1998 Bill Gates wanted to buy it. I did not sell it then, but later on I had to sell it because of the (tough) conditions. There are many photo agencies today, like Reuters, AP, AFP, EPA, Getty, Corbis. It is very difficult to survive when you are competing with them," Sipahioğlu said.
The exhibition in Paris has 36 photos on display, including Sipahioğlu’s photos from 1968 student riots in China. A book, featuring the historical riot photos was also put on sale in France in April. Sipahioğlu is a world-renowned photographer. He is known as the only Western journalist to succeed in entering Cuba during the missile crisis in 1961. He sold SİPA, which he established in 1971, to a French media group, Sud Communication.
Former French President Jacques Chirac presented Sipahioğlu with a "Legion d’Honneur" last year. He was also awarded the Medal for Arts and Literature in 2003.
