ADANA - There are more than 3,000 people earning their money from collecting things from trashcans in Adana.

Sadullah Leventoğlu, the head of the Waste Collectors Union, said that 3,400 people collect 400 tons of waste a day, making a contribution to the city’s economy. The majority of the materials collected are plastic, nylon, glass and boxes, but the union is most proud of its work in paper.

"We collect 50 tons of paper every day," said Leventoğlu. "We save 900 trees from being cut, every day." Çetin Berköz, the head of the Adana Bar’s Environmental Commission said that they are supporting the Union’s works. "We plan to make collectors’ work official, so that they can work more organized."
