ISTANBUL - Turkey will welcome the New Year with a wave of cold weather from Siberia as temperatures fall to around 5 degrees Celsius around Turkey. The snowfall that blocked many roads in central and eastern Anatolia is expected to continue today, the private NTV news channel reported yesterday.
For those who want to celebrate the New Year outdoors, they should be prepared for cold weather. Thermometers will show 3 degrees Celsius, but the temperature will drop to zero today and during the New Year in Istanbul. The weather from Siberia will also influence southern Turkey. The tourist city of Antalya will welcome the New Year with 7 degrees Celsius, which is very cold for that city.Â
On Dec. 31, snowfall is only expected in eastern Anatolia and the Black Sea region. The sky will be bright in the rest of Turkey so many will welcome the New Year in snow-less, but cold weather. Snowfall is not expected in the first days of 2009, but there will be ice. Meteorologists warned people about ice in central and eastern Anatolia especially in the mornings. Powerful winds from the north and northwest are also expected to affect the Marmara and Aegean coasts of Turkey.
Snowfall continued in eastern Turkey yesterday. Flights to Kars Airport were delayed yesterday due to heavy snowfall, the Doğan news agency reported yesterday. Also, the surface of Çıldır Lake in the Ardahan province on the border of the Kars province has frozen. Fishermen were fishing from holes in the lake despite the risk. The ice on the surface of the lake will remain until April, said Erkan Cimşit, an aquaculturist in the region.
