ISTANBUL - After many incidents such as fires and robbery took place in various mosques around the city, the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality has decided to install security cameras for 24-hour surveillance and protection.
Fifty mosques in Istanbul have been chosen for the project and according to information on municipality’s Web site, the first step of the project will be locating 50 cameras in 23 places around the historic peninsula and Beyoğlu.
Sultanahmet Mosque, Nuri Osmaniye Mosque, Yeni Mosque, Hagia Sophia, Sultan Ahmet Mosque, II. Beyazıt Mosque, Topkapı Palace, Takkeci Mosque, Galata Tower, Bademlik Mosque, Fethi Çelebi Mosque and Fire Tower are among the place where the cameras will be installed.
Cameras help in emergencies
The cameras will provide sufficient control of the historic sites and be helpful in emergencies. The project foresees that illegal construction, fires and similar damage caused to artifacts will be witnessed and stopped. The cameras are also expected to be a deterrent factor. Viewing an expanded area, the cameras will not only protect the mosques, but also will operate for the safety of the whole field of view.
The cameras will be installed on minarets by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Protection Implementation and Control Directorate, or KUDEB. They can supply long distance images and even see small details on the artifacts once zoomed in. The construction work in Süleymaniye district is under control after the first two cameras were placed on the KUDEB building.
The center where the camera recordings are screened and followed by technicians will also help the legal system. If an incident takes place it will directly be reported to the police.
Cameras placed in the Fatih district are also helpful to catch the artifact smugglers and intervene in fires that break out mostly in old wooden houses. Mehmet Şimşek, the manager of KUDEB, confirmed that the main purpose is to protect historic artifacts and mosques. "We can view the people who damage houses and build illegally," Şimşek said. With the camera system, a fire was reported to the fire department and a few other incidents to the police station, he said.
