An art production center opened its doors in Istanbul’s ISTANBUL - Yenikapı district with the support of the Fatih municipality. Yenikapi center is also expected to play a part in the Istanbul European Cultural Capital project in 2010.

With 357 days left until Istanbul becomes the European Cultural Capital for 2010 preparations have begun including the opening of an art center in Istanbul’s historic Yenikapı district.

The new art production center, opened by the Fatih municipality in the Yenikapı district where the city’s walls foundations were laid during Emperor Constantine’s rule, aims to encourage aspiring artists to develop their work and abilities. "Our center calls out to all artists to come and participate in our workshops and experiment with other artists in order to develop and nurture their artistic souls," Fatih Mayor Mustafa Demir said, speaking at the opening of the center Tuesday.

According to the chairman of the 2010 cultural capital agenda, Nuri Colakoglu, the Yenikapı center will also play a part in the Istanbul European Cultural Capital project, "Living and Working in Istanbul." The objective of the project is to host 10 internationally acclaimed artists in Istanbul, allowing them to live and work with Turkish artists to merge ideas and achieve a better understanding of Turkish culture and art. Upon completion of the assignment the project committee anticipates artists will return home and share what they learned about Turkish culture with artists in their own counties.

World famous Italian artist Remo Salvadori has come to Istanbul this week as the first participant in project. Salvadori will host studio workshops for a group of 20 young artists between Jan. 7 and 17 at the new center, after which an exhibition of the work produced will be displayed.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Salvadori said the main focus of the workshop sessions would be positioning objects in different spaces. The main point of reference in Salvadori’s work has always been space, which he interprets as a source of creative psychic energy so that even his studio becomes a theme within the work itself and is transfigured into the spiritual resonance that typify the environments and objects in his work.

Talking about shapes
"Throughout my stay in Istanbul, I hope to make people notice the recurrent geometrical forms in space, the square, an element of stability belonging to the earth; the circle, evoking the cosmos and transcendence," said Salvadori, adding that these reoccurring shapes have a vast range of possible meanings that can be interpreted in many different ways.

Following the 10 days of workshops, Salvadori will chose 10 artists to carry out another project under his direction, which will also be exhibited at the Yenikapı center. In his closing words, Salvadori said he was honored to be working in a city as culturally and artistically rich as Istanbul and anticipates great success for the Living and Working in Istanbul project.
