ISTANBUL - Turkish cinema and TVartists join forces under the roof of an organization named the United Artists Occupational Group. The goal is to protect rights and demand royalties for films and TV series they work on.
Artists of Turkish cinema who have found international success and contributed to promoting Turkey abroad have formed a group to protect artists’ rights and demand royalties for films and TV series they worked on.
Speaking on behalf of the United Artists Occupational Group, or BIROY, actor Zafer Algöz said they wanted to bring together hundreds of people who work in cinema and television within BIROY. "Just like musicians who get a payment when their work is performed, we should retain our rights to the screening of our films and TV series. This is not a favor, but our right," he said.
Culture Minister Ertuğrul Günay met yesterday with actors and actresses, including Algöz, Erkan Can, Fadik Sevin Atasoy, Nejat İşler, Burcu Kara, Fikret Kuşkan, Ali Sürmeli, Güven Kıraç, Ragıp Savaş, Olgun Şimşek, Ülkü Duru , İştar Gökseven and Janset Pajal.
Algöz said Günay had previously supported them in the formation of BIROY. "We need to determine which model we will choose to ensure royalty payments are made. There are different models in the United States and Italy," he said.
Algöz said musicians especially had taken big steps toward protecting their rights, and had formed their own organizations. "Actors and actresses should gather under the roof of an organization. Such an organization has been attempted in the past but was not successful. This time we need to be successful."
Algöz said their goal was to gather at least 1,000 artists under one roof. "We had talks with everyone who set their heart on Yeşilçam (Turkey’s Hollywood). Even actors or actresses who have only starred in one
film, we should also accept them as members of our organization. We should do this for the rights of Turkish artists and for the prestige of our profession."
Famous actress Fadik Sevin Atasoy said a formation such as BIROY was a necessity in Turkey, adding that they were very pleased with the support they had received, especially from the Culture Ministry. She said they wanted to work in a healthier and more productive environment.
Ministry’s support
A written statement from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism said it was a big step for cinema and TV artists to pursue their rights with the formation of an organization. The ministry said the film industry has become an important investment tool in recent years and that viewers often chose films depending on who was starring in them. "It is expected that this organization will also play a important role in the development of the industry," the ministry said.
