Said Baykal yesterday, "Look, a member of the Prime Minister's security detail had to have 14 stitches yesterday. I am not saying this with the intention of blaming anyone, but this should be a clue."

Baykal also added, "There are some vital cracks appearing beneath the surface now in Turkey. First off, the religion schism is growing. Then, there is a division among people of differing ethnicities. And the third is that, on top of all of these, there is a schism between Islam and Judaism that is being experienced on an international level. This is affecting Turkey.....The current administration is unfortunately carrying Turkey further towards clashes and divisions."

Baykal went on to talk about what he perceives as a growing necessity for an election in the current
atmosphere:

Do I need to remove my shoe like Krushchev did?

"We need elections now. There is no one but me calling for them though. Which is why they aren't happening.
It looks certain that they won't take place. We didn't press for it; the media didn't enter into it.....I wonder if I should take off my shoe like Krushchev did and bang it on the parliamentary podium?"
