ANKARA - The main opposition party’s rising star, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, has driven Ankara Mayor Melih Gökçek into a corner through the disclosure of a document.

The day after the live verbal duel between Kılıçdaroğlu, which is the party’s parliamentary group deputy leader, and Gökçek on Wednesday, Kılıçdaroğlu produced a document that showed Gökçek had requested a consultancy company to conduct a poll about Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, prior to the 2002 elections in return for YTL 354,000.

"There is an invoice for YTL 354,000 in the Ergenekon case files drawn up in the name of Gökçek by a consultancy firm, the Political Economic Social Research and Strategy Development Center, or SESAR. Gökçek paid the invoice. How and from what source did Gökçek pay this money," said Kılıçdaroğlu, speaking to a group of journalists in Parliament on Thursday.

The invoice is dated June 13, 2003 and the classified services made by the company include a consultancy fee and research fees to identify Erdoğan’s discrepancies, how the ruling party could be prevented from coming to power and how Erdoğan could be undermined if he came to power.

’Ergenekon plot’
Gökçek, meanwhile, denied Kılıçdaroğlu’s allegations in a press conference held yesterday and said he did not ask the company to conduct the research.

"SESAR came to me and asked if it could help me. It then conducted its own research and I did not see the results. After the (2002) elections I found an invoice on my table. We spoke only three times. I called them and rebuked," Gökçek said.

"It is obvious it is a plot against me as a part of Ergenekon. My lawyer conducted the necessary procedures. I did not pay any money to that company. The CHP should provide proof of the payment voucher," he said.
