ISTANBUL - Şişli Municipality Science Center, which has operated since the end of 2004 in Istanbul, launches a winter school program to fuel children’s interest in science. It offers various workshops astronomy, maths and electronics.
In an effort to fuel children’s interest in science, Istanbul’s Şişli Municipality Science Center has launched a winter school program to take place during the two-week school semester break starting at the end of January.
The aim of the course is to provide children between the ages of 7-13 with a broad, entertaining and interactive education experience that will leave a lasting impact on them Ğ encouraging them to start the new semester in a more informed, refreshed and motivated fashion.
Workshops
The course is comprised of various workshops including drama, archaeology, maths, astronomy, global warming, electronics, arts, crafts and history. The winter school will be coordinated by Turkey’s Science Center Foundation, who believe, that by participating in these interactive workshops children have a better chance of grasping the material taught and applying it to their everyday lives. In these sessions children will be taught about safety in hazardous environments and about safety measures that should be taken in the instance of a fire or an earthquake. Moreover, the workshops will endeavor to teach children about the environment and ways of being environmentally friendly, for example staff will show the children how the solar energy panel situated outside the center can operate a large plasma television within the building.
The Şişli Municipality Science Center is the perfect setting for the winter school as it is filled with artifacts and interactive displays and games that allow children to perform scientific experiments, giving them a better understanding of the environment around them. The center is home to a vast number of artifacts such as rocks and tree roots from across the world, but the most impressive pieces of the collection is a fin whale skeleton, one of only four exhibited worldwide. In addition to the interactive displays and artifacts the Center has its own planetarium that depicts the positioning of the different planets and stars.
During the program children will also be taken on outings to various museums and science laboratories. These include the Istanbul Archeology Museum, the Sabnacı Museum, the Istanbul Modern Gallery, the Biscuit and Chocolate Factory and the Bosphorus Universities’ Genetics laboratories.
The winter school program will be held at the Şişli Municipality Science Center in Fulya daily from Jan. 26 - Feb. 6, between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. The one-week program will cost 250 Turkish lira and for two weeks it will cost 500 lira. Outside of the winter program the science center is open to all visitors seven days a week between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., with guided tours of the center and weekend workshops.
