ISTANBUL - Akenerji Elektrik Üretim, a Turkish power producer, plans to invest $3 billion by 2013 to increase its generating capacity almost tenfold, Chief Executive Officer Ahmet Ümit Danışman said Tuesday in Istanbul.

The company, in partnership with the Czech firm CEZ Group, aims to raise its capacity to 3,000 megawatts by 2013.

Cez Group is also eyeing opportunities to take part in privatization tenders in Turkey and envisions a role for itself in building nuclear power plants in the country. CEZ Group, composed of more than 90 Czech and foreign firms, is currently one of the 10 largest energy companies in Europe.

"Energy demand in Turkey between the years 2009 and 2016 will increase by 6 to 8 percent annually. Total consumption capacity will almost double from the current 198.294 GWh to 390.559 GWh," said Mehmet Ali Berkman, chairman of the Akkök Group, Akenerji’s parent company. "Turkey’s energy sector is attracting the attention of international investors with its notable potential."

More megawatts

Akenerji and CEZ Group expect to increase capacity in Turkey from 358 megawatts to 746 megawatts in 2011, when nine hydroelectric plants and a wind farm come on line.

Martin Roman, chief executive officer of CEZ Group, said the firm is keen to take part in the upcoming privatization tenders. "If the government continues its privatizations, we could participate in the upcoming tenders for privatization of both generation and distribution, and definitely develop the renewable energy as well," Roman said.

Cez Group is also interested in developing nuclear energy in Turkey. "Nuclear energy can help both in the battle of climate change and [for] Turkey to become independent in energy production," Roman said. "We would like to participate in a nuclear plant project in Turkey, but such a project is an extremely costly and long-term investment. We would therefore appreciate if the Turkish government would be part of this as well. We, for our part, will evaluate every opportunity."
