ISTANBUL - Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality has commissioned 3,557 people to tackle adverse weather conditions. There will be 1,058 vehicles driving around the city to prevent accidents. The municipality also has placed automatic meteorology observation sensors at 25 points around the city
Metropolitan Municipality, or İBB, has started taking measures to fight bad weather conditions. Istanbul, whose troubled infrastructure becomes a mess when snow falls, will be controlled, guarded and protected by 3,557 employees and 1,058 vehicles.
With Istanbul Mayor Kadir Topbaş as chairman and General Secretary Mesut Pektaş as coordinator, a commission gathered with chairpersons of relevant units at the Disaster Coordination Center, or AKOM. According to the announcement made by İBB, during the meeting various measures were taken to tackle the adverse weather conditions.
Snow tires would be required for all municipal vehicles including Istanbul buses in case of emergency, according to the commission, which also advises citizens to use snow tires on their cars for safe and secure traffic.
Consolidating vehicles from the municipality
AKOM, which will be in charge of all the coordination for the city, will get support from the municipality if necessary. Depending on how much rain or snow there is, employees and vehicles will be consolidated by the municipality. The contractor firms, which cooperate with the metropolitan municipality, will also provide support if needed.
The bridges, overpasses, underpasses, bus stops, piers, squares, the entrances of hospitals and schools will be cleaned by special vehicles. At the Taksim, Sultanahmet, Mecidiyeköy,
Beşiktaş, Beyazıt, Eminönü, Bakırköy, Eyüp, Kavacık, Bağlarbaşı, Dudulu, Kadıköy and Üsküdar squares, the road maintenance and repair teams will use snowplows named "Snow Tiger." Six of them, which will be cleaning, drying and spreading salt, will be on duty on the highways.
The snowplows were supplied one year ago. They can reach a speed of 80 kilometers per hour and can spread salt on a 40-kilometer area in one go. The vehicle, which can strafe sideways like a crab, is capable of clearing 5-meter-wide through the snow.
The plows will start from the European side of Istanbul and clear the bridges, bridge tolls, Mahmutbey, İstoç, Vatan Avenue, Hadımköy, Büyükçekmece and Mimarsinan highway curves bridge and
Fenerbahçe Stadium.
AKOM divided Istanbul into nine regions for better coordination of the city and to work efficiently. The road maintenance teams will cover 4,613 kilometers with 3,557 people will work within the plan.
AKOM will also keep track of the vehicles with a special system. In case of emergency the vehicles will be sent to the necessary points.
The teams will clear the way to the villages around Istanbul with tractors supplied by the municipality.
Besides the vehicles that will be working for people not to suffer, there will also be 75 lifts, 4,640 firefighters, 29 ambulances and 80 doctors to take part in case of emergency.
The municipality placed automatic meteorology observation sensors at 25 points around the city to direct the teams to correct locations around the city. Aiming to take action on the right time, the weather conditions will be followed by AKOM.
