FETHİYE - For five days from today, the streets of Hisarönü, a tourist resort in the mountains above Ölüdeniz and just outside Fethiye, will hum with the sounds of Carnival.

Although not really part of Anatolian culture, over the alst eight years the resort town has created a party atmosphere during the last week of June that is unrivalled in Turkey. It attracts many foreigners and Turks alike, with a range of fun activities and music events.

For those who want, there is dance and modern music and for others a range of Türkü, traditional Turkish folk music. Street theater and a beauty contest make sure there is something for everyone.

It is being organized by a group of local businessman and bar owners who have taken the collective name "Hisarder"- or Hisarönü Improvement Association. It will be interesting to see how they propose to do this.

Change of organization

Previously organized by the Municipality of Ölüdeniz and called the Culture and Art Festival, Hisarder have now assumed responsibility.

They have added a street carnival to the events and cranked up the "Rio" effect with dancers and musicians. But do not be confused by the Brazilian reference, as originally, one of the main purposes of the festival was to reintroduce Turkish culture into an area that has become the exclusive reserve of low-cost package tourism; selling more bacon sandwiches and curries than börek.

This was achieved to a certain extent with celebrity Turkish singers Ğ like Suavi, one of the country’s veteran protest artists Ğ last year but this crisis-laden year forced the organizers to keep their focus to a minimum local stars are performing instead.

There is certainly a party atmosphere and alcohol flows freely in a town where every virtually every shop has a bar or club perched above it. It is certain that everyone in Hisarönü and Olüdeniz will be having a ball this week.
