ISTANBUL - A man called the "chief perfumer" is walking the streets of Istanbul, sniffing around in an attempt to design a fragrance exclusive to the city.

Andor Hun, whose nose is insured for $1.5 million, said Istanbul’s fragrance should be extroverted, elegant and evoke oriental associations.

Hun, 79, of Hungarian origin, has earned his living through his nose for half a century. He has worked with major companies all over the world and created thousands of fragrances, all of which contributed to his title as the "longest living perfumer." Hun has been a consultant for the Gülçiçek Company in Turkey for eight years now. Hun’s most recent big project is a fragrance to be named "Istanbul." Hun is working with a team of 10 people from the Gülçiçek Company and visits Istanbul every two months for 10 to 15 days, smelling the city and trying to form the essence of the fragrance.

Hun, who is planning to finish work on the fragrance this year, is in Istanbul wandering around Galata, the shores of the Bosphorus, the Grand Bazaar and Sultanahmet. Hun says designing perfume is both a science and an art. "This special city, which has a sea running through the middle of it, is home to different smells taken from its history, culture and modern life."

Hun said he could not compare Istanbul to any other city in the world. "We should produce a smell that is associated with the Bosphorus, people’s rushed lives and flowers. It should convey the changes of Istanbul."
