Çannakale Museum travels to Fethiye

FETHİYE - A traveling museum full of reminders of battles fought in 1915 at Seddülbahir in Çanakkale, western Turkey, is visiting Fethiye this week.
Organized by Cengiz Yürükaslan and Ahmet Uslu, the exhibit has been installed at the Tourism High School and is open and free of charge to everyone.
Seddülbahir was a military campaign that resulted in incalculable deaths and suffering, but importantly for Turkey, despite the strength of the British Navy and the combined forces of the British and French armies, Turkish soldiers managed to protect their homeland from invasion.
Standing by the tombstones that name Fethiye’s soldiers who died in Seddülbahir, two 18-year-old students, Mustafa Köker from the Business High School and Hasan Büyüklebleri from the Tourism High School, discussed with gravity the thought-provoking exhibition.
"We are the same age as these ’Mehmetçik’ (young soldiers) and seeing this is very important for us," Köker said. "We never forget but sometimes, with all the computer war games, films and so on, we see war in a different way. This is a way to remind us of the reality of what happened," Büyüklebleri said. A variety of items from the three country’s soldiers’ daily lives have been touchingly displayed Ñ cutlery, footwear, buttons and even a sailor’s cap from the HMS Ocean. It is a reminder to all of the horror of war.
