In his address in a symposium at the War Academies on Thursday, Second Chief of Staff Gen. Yasar Buyuanit said that, “Turkey is a part of Europe and will enter EU.”The target of AtaturkBuyukanit said that, "Let me say in bold letters that Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) can not oppose EU because it follows the path of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk and regards it as a necessity to attain contemporary civilization. The EU target, can not comply with the targets of those circles against the unitary and laic structure of the country.” He said, “Turkey is part of EU and will eventually enter it. This is a clear answer to some circles which criticize TSK as being an obstacle. Army has been the pioneer power of the Ataturk reforms. It will continue being the staunch supporter of the reforms which are in line with EU. Those who try to use EU reforms to materialize their dark objectives will fail.”Buyukanit said that, “TSK can not be against EU because EU is the necessity of the modernization project introduced by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk in geopolitical and geostrategic terms. This necessity is also completely in line with the social, political, economic and security targets of Turkey. The EU target is not in compliance with the outdated and separatist aims of the circles that have different opinions about the unitary structure and secular regime of the country. It is an inevitable result that those who attempt to use EU and high values of this Union to attain their outdated and separatist targets would be disappointed.”We shall enrich EUBuyukanit said that, "We applied to EU in 1987 for full membership and still are a candidate. We shall contribute to the cultural richness of Europe, once we are admitted. Our relations date back to 1963 when we signed the Ankara agreement with EU. I am underlining that 40 years elapsed since than. East European countries are already admitted as EU members. We are fighting against the baseless prejudices that Turkey has a different culture and religion. Turkish Armed Forces became the target of an unfair attack that it was against EU membership. These claims are totally untrue.”
