ISTANBUL - After Bursa was visited by the European Museum Forum in 2006 they decided to host the presentation of ’the European Museum of the Year Award 2009’ in the city. During the meeting there will be activities in the city in which local residents will be able to participate
The northwestern city of Bursa will announce the "European Museum of the Year Award 2009," as it hosts 200 hundred representatives from nearly 100 museums at this year’s annual European Museum Forum.
The event showcasing 97 different museums from 26 countries starts today and runs through to May 9.
With its historic architecture, natural wonders and other treasures that have been protected for thousands of years, Bursa is a popular attraction for many prominent names in the arts.
An award-winning museum
Forum authorities decided to host this year’s meeting in Bursa after they were in the city to present the Bursa City Museum with an award for 2006. Last year the forum was held in Dublin, Ireland, and won by the German Emigration Center in Bremhaven.
The forum, an independent and non- profit organization, evolved from the European Museum of the Year Award scheme, which was founded in 1977. The EMF is dedicated to raising the standard of museums throughout Europe, and as well as present awards, it also provides a network for museums to share experiences and information. The association also runs diverse European programs in cooperation with museums and other institutions.
The Museum of the Year Award considers newly built or restored museums to be included in the competition. The forum, besides awarding museums, organizes workshops to raise the expertise of museum practitioners, provide lectures dealing with themes that are related to the museum world and offers a consultancy service.
The head office of the EMF is in Bristol, England, but it also keeps archives at the Institut für Museumskunde in Berlin. These archives contain information pertaining to every museum candidate for the Museum of the Year Award since the awards creation and are open to researchers.
Attendees of the forum
Organized with the support of the Council of Europe and the patronage of Her Majesty Queen Fabiola of Belgium, the EMF will be joined by the Princess of Luxemburg Sibilla Sandra Weiller when she becomes a member of the evaluation committee.
Among the other well-known names who will attend the forum are Spain’s Irun Mayor Jose Antonio Santana, who will represent the Oiasso Roman Museum and Basque city council member Maria Jesus Aramburu. The forum committee consists of 15 experts from 12 countries and 32 national correspondents.
The forum will host representatives from museums that display everything from archaeology, literature and science to ethnography, technology and transportation.
The Istanbul Modern Art Museum and the Ankara Foundations Museum are among the museums competing for this year’s award.
The European museum managers arrived in Bursa after a two-day tour in Istanbul. They will also visit historic sites in Bursa. The committee will interview representatives from all the candidate museums and the award ceremony will be held on May 9, the last day of the forum.
Quality of museology
After Bursa won the "Museum Worth Visiting Award 2006" at the ceremony in Lisbon, Bursa Mayor Recep Altepe said: "With this award Bursa has taken a step in proving the quality of its museology. The decision to hold this year’s forum in Bursa was taken in Lisbon," he said.
According to Altepe the forum in Bursa is not only a meeting but also a platform for Bursa to be promoted to the world.
During the forum the public of Bursa will have the chance to follow and attend the activities organized in the city. There will be an exhibition of famous calligraphy artist Ali Toy, whose works include different types of calligraphy such as Talik, Divani and Rika and a cartoon exhibit in Bursa’s Tayyare Culture Center.
Bursa City Museum will be displaying Ahmet Erdönmez’s work related to the city’s cuisine culture and traditions. The museum will also host the famous tile artisan Turgut Tuna’s work.
Next year the EMF will be held in Finland’s third largest city, Tampere. One of the nominees for museum of the year will be the Istanbul Toy Museum.
