FETHİYE, Muğla - From a small coastal town to one of the most popular holiday spots of the country, Fethiye has changed a lot in the last decades. Susan Tekin has experienced this change first hand.
Only a year after her first visit to the district in Muğla., Susan Tekin was married to Türkay Tekin in 1977, to be named as "the first English bride of Fethiye."
Now, 63-year-old Susan Tekin feels deeply nostalgic when she remembers those good old days.
"When I came to Fethiye for holidays, it was just a small town, and there was only one camping place in Ölüdeniz," she recalls. "Now, it is almost a big city, but I miss the old Fethiye."
Back after 20 years
After being granted Turkish citizenship in 1981, Susan and her family had to make a decision and moved to England due to financial matters, but returned in 2001. And she is not planning to move anywhere again. "I love the weather in Fethiye, I love the sea, the nature and the fresh air," she said. "I love Turkish meals and cook local food as well. I learned Turkish even though it was hard at first. I never want to leave this place again."
She loves Fethiye so much that she wants to be a part of the town even when she dies.
"I am a Turk and I love Turkey, Fethiye, and Turkish people, who helped me a lot during my time here," she said. "I want to be buried in Fethiye when I die." Tekin is contributing a lot to the community too, as she is the chairperson of the Fethiye International Group and a member of the Fethiye Tourism and Environmental Organization, or FETAV. Opening stands to sell second-hand goods, Tekin and co. gives proceeds to local students in need.
