ISTANBUL - ’The Bridge of Hearts’ project, sponsored by the National Education Ministry and Turkcell, launches its second year with a ceremony in Istanbul. More than 10,000 students from Turkey’s 81 provinces will take part this year.
First party of students taking part in a project organized by the Ministry of National Education and Turkcell, Turkey’s leading GSM operator, gathered at Istanbul’s Yıldız Park Thursday. The "Bridge of Hearts" project was launched with a ceremony attended by Minister of National Education Nimet Çubukçu and Turkcell CEO Süreyya Ciliv.
At the opening ceremony, those students and teachers who participated in the project last year, and who won the photography and the best essay competitions received their awards. While Halime Arslan, a student from Erzurum who was unable to hold back her tears of joy, shared her experience as a student who had seen the sea for the first time in her life, another student Şenay Öcek read a part of her essay that touched everyone’s hearts.
Minister of National Education Nimet Çubukçu said: "Students from all over 81 provinces of Turkey who participated in the Bridge of Hearts project last year established love bonds, built bridges of hearts between one another. They have seen places that they never dreamed of before Ğ the history and the beauties of our country. Their experiences were unforgettable. We are continuing with the project this year, hoping that the experience will widen students’ horizons and help them discover the natural and cultural beauties that our country possesses." Çubukçu also highlighted the importance of learning by experience. Şerife Aksoy, a student guidance counselor, supported Çubukçu, by stating that she witnessed students carrying "sea water" in plastic bottles back to their homes last year. She also recalled that some were so excited that they jumped into the water wearing their daily clothes.

Turkcell CEO Süreyya Ciliv said: "We witnessed the shine in the eyes of our students last year. As their experiences evolve, their faith in the future and their hopes will get stronger. We are not just a corporation; we are a family, that works as a team for the future of Turkey." The Bridge of Hearts project aims to show the natural and cultural beauties of Turkey to students coming from all around the country and help them form life-long friendships. Teachers who were chosen by the provincial directorates of education will accompany the students on these excursions.
In addition to excursions, students will also participate in cultural activities, visit historical and tourist locations and clean several beaches. In the project, which was first launched in 2008, this year 10,000 students are expected to attend cultural tours that will last for five days between June 23 and July 20. Students from the 7th and 8th grades of elementary school and the 9th, 10th and 11th grades of high school will join the excursions. For a change, this year a number of disabled students will also attend the tours.
