SAO PAULO - An imprisoned leftist Italian fugitive wanted in connection with four killings in the 1970s won a victory Tuesday from Brazil in his bid to be named a political refugee, the government said.
Justice Minister Tarso Genro decided that Cesare Battisti should be allowed to stay in Brazil because of evidence "based on the fear of persecution" if he is extradited to Italy, Genro's ministry said.
