ISTANBUL - Istanbul Electric Tram and Funicular Company, or İETT, will purchase 100 Mercedes-Benz CapaCity vehicles from automotive company Daimler for metrobus lines, to reduce traffic density at main traffic arteries in Istanbul.
İETT, the first company in the world in 2007 to purchase Mercedes-Benz CapaCitys, uses the vehicles for metrobus transportation.
İETT initially bought 50 vehicles and after a few months of operation on metrobus lines without any problems, the company requested 100 more vehicles from Daimler. With the recent agreement made between İETT and Daimler, the total number of metrobuses will be 250. İETT will pay 125 million euros for the next 100 buses, each of which will have the capacity to carry 193 passengers. Metrobus lines pass through some of the most bustling neighborhoods in Istanbul.
The vehicles, more economical than normal İETT buses, are imported from Germany. The construction of a 18.3-kilometer route for metrobuses started at the beginning of 2007 and opened on Sept. 17. The metrobus system has reduced travel time between Topkapı and the Avcılar district from 67 to 22 minutes. The successful completion of the system, known as Beylikdüzü-Kozyatağı, has given great impetus to new planned routes.
