ISTANBUL - Blasting away at bowling pins is a good way to relieve stress from work and last week’s two-day company bowling tournament proved successful once again as mobile phone company Turkcell lifted the trophy.
The Hürriyet Daily News & Economic Review sent a women’s team to the event, which was organized for the fifth time by Interlink Company for 64 companies in Istanbul, but the wait to hit the lane midweek took its toll on the Daily News team’s patience and they abandoned their quest for bowling greatness.
Pelin Özgen of the Çanakkale Seramik Company, the winner of the best woman bowler title in the last competition, was also competing on a women’s team. Her three colleagues were participating in the tournament for the first time. "Of course this helps to strengthen team spirit. It has been months since we had a night out with the girls. We do not even want any men on our team," Özgen said.
"We came here to have fun and we have!" said Koray Çakmak, a team member for the Henkel Company. Çakmak, a chain store sales manager, said they were confident they would win. "I think that these kinds of events strengthen team sprit," he said.
A total of 61 teams competed in four separate groups in the semifinal that was held Tuesday. Sixteen teams won the right to compete in the finals. Interlink Company, as it did in previous tournaments, withdrew from the finals despite winning in the semis. The 16th team, Interlink’s replacement, was determined by lottery and CP Standard Company went through.
In the finals, oil company OPET came second and durable consumer goods company Bosch came third.
Mustafa Kütük and Esra Ayış won prizes for best male and female players.
