NEW YORK - The Boston Bruins’ goalkeeper Tim Thomas continues his good form, completing his third shutout of the season to help his side to a win over the New Jersey Devils in the NHL. Meanwhile, things are never tight for San Jose, who destroyed Vancouver 5-0

Tim Thomas made 25 saves to record his third shutout of the season and help the Boston Bruins to a 2-0 win over the New Jersey Devils and their sixth successive victory on Tuesday.

Milan Lucic snapped a scoreless tie 49 seconds into the third period and David Krejci added an empty net goal with 48 seconds remaining to help Boston (25-5-4) move seven points ahead of the New York Rangers on top of the Eastern Conference standings.

"It was a nice win," Boston coach Claude Julien said. "We were patient against a very good team and those are the kind of games you have to work hard in order to win." New Jersey coach Brent Sutter said the game resembled the intensity of the playoffs.

"Both teams played really tight," Sutter said. "It was a playoff-type game. We did have some opportunities but it just didn't go in. What were the scoring opportunities? Five or six for each team? That's how tight it was."

Stopping shots
Thomas made several important saves after the Bruins took the lead in the third period including stopping shots from both Travis Zajac and Dainius Zubrus in the final four minutes to record his 10th career shutout.

"My team mates helped me out tonight big time, getting to rebounds," Thomas said. "They gave me a pretty good Christmas present."

Boston's Phil Kessel had his 18-game points streak ended, but the Bruins still had enough offence to hand Scott Clemmensen a rare loss.

The game is never that tight when San Jose plays, as the Shark piled on a record-breaking five goals in the first 21 minutes for a 5-0 win over the Vancouver Canucks.

Captain Patrick Marleau had a goal and two assists during the barrage to keep San Jose unbeaten in regulation time at home this season.

The Sharks tormented Vancouver goalie Cory Schneider, who gave up those five goals on 15 shots before getting yanked. The scoring burst set a franchise record for the quickest five goals to open a game.
