DİYARBAKIR - Former executives at Diyarbakır Dicle University Hospital dismissed claims they had purchased an excessive amount of medicine, arguing the current stock would not be enough to cover the next 10 months. The former deputy chief surgeon of the hospital, Günör Ateş, said they would file a complaint against the current chief surgeon, Assistant Professor Sait Aslan. "This is extra-judicial prosecution," he said.

Speaking at a hotel because Aslan had prevented the former executives from holding a press conference at the hospital, Ateş and former rector Professor Fikri Canoruç responded to the claims. "The guilty should be punished but we are innocent. It is wrong to make such public accusations without an investigation," said Canoruç.

Ateş said the former administration had purchased 11.5 million Turkish Liras worth of medicine in 2008, 10.9 million liras of which was through public auctions. The comments about the medicine Rapifen, which Aslan said had been used once in 2008 but there were 4,000 boxes stored at depots, was just a lie, said Ateş. "The medicine called Fentanyl, which is used as a substitute for Rapifen, was used 4,600 times in 2008," he said, dismissing claims the current Rapifen in storage would last 4,000 years."Rapifen in stock will last for 10 months at most," he said.

He also dismissed other claims made by Aslan, stating the current stock of medicine would not outlast the year. Ateş also said one-third of the expired medical stock had come from the cardiology department, the head of which used to be Aslan. Ateş said medical supplies were moved to and fro to make the depots look full.
