ANKARA - Turkey will start to process its own boron and trona minerals thanks to the completion of a soda ash manufacturing facility in Ankara’s Beypazarı district. The manufacturing plant aims to meet 2.5 percent of world’s need for soda ash, or sodium carbonate.

"We always took pride in our boron and trona reserves but did not roll up our sleeves. Now it is time to process these minerals into new products," Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said at the inaugural ceremony yesterday. Praising the efforts to extract boron and trona, which are considered as Turkey’s two strategic minerals, Erdoğan pointed to the importance of soda ash for the future of the Turkish economy. He said the facilities would directly or indirectly provide jobs for 1,500 people.

The soda ash manufacturing plant, whose fixed investment is $290 million, was established jointly by the Ciner Group and the state-owned Eti Mine Works in 1998. The Beypazarı trona seam is the world’s second largest soda ash reserve.
