ISTANBUL - Next to Kanyon’s Elit toy store is Istanbul’s first children’s bookstore Yalvac Abi Kitapevi - the other branch is in Nişantaşı. Here, fun and educational features cling to nearly every book and toy.
They have top-notch soft blocks and 3D puzzles from the likes of German toymaker Haba. Activity books such as "Tim’s Play and Learn" and touch & learn encyclopedias are the store’s specialty, saleswoman Mehtap Karaman told the Daily News.
Shivering past the empty Haagen-Dazs ice cream shop across from kid-row, the Istanbul Modern Museum is a welcome stop with its child-level row of art-inspired activity and coloring books and games for kids, several of which are in English. World-famous Turkish painter Fikret Mualla’s work appears in a generous alphabet book with old-style cutouts from his paintings to accompany big colorful letters.
A wing full of English
For those seeking Dr. Seuss, Horrid Henry or other English books and games for babies to teens, though, look no further than Kanyon’s sprawling Remzi Kitabevi with an entire wing full of hundreds of English titles. Activity books with CDs and DVDs and dozens of board games in English cover one wall. Upstairs, D&R Music and Bookstore is even larger and carries a respectable variety of English-language items.
