Güncelleme Tarihi:
Kenan Avci, who went to Diyarbakir following the detonation of a remote controlled car bomb at the Maslak gas station, was captured when he returned to Istanbul carrying more than 7 kilos of A4 explosive with him. It was announced by police that Avci was in fact a student at Mugla University.
Simultaneous attacks
Of the PKK terrorists captured during the operation carried out by the Bureau for Intelligence and the Struggle against Terror, 2 were revealed to be Marmara University students, 2 Mugla University students, and 1 from Istanbul Technical University. The group was reportedly planning simultaneous attacks in Istanbul and Diyarbakir on October 29, Turkey's Republic Day.
Clues from video camera footage
Video tape footage from the October 15 explosion at the Maslak OPET station, in which 5 people were injured, shows the bomber sporting a short beard and a red tie. In the wake of the bombing, the car used for the detonation was shown to have been bought with fake documents a short time before the incident. Though police were able to determine the identity of the bomber very shortly after the bombing, Mugla University student Kenan Avci was able to escape to Diyarbakir directly after the incident.
The cell broken up
Following the suspect secretly in the police operation which followed the bombing, police arrested Avci along with Nusret Inci, Enver Akcay, Lutfu Yoldas, and Veysel Dereli, all of whom Avci met with in Istanbul following the Maslak explosion. Arrests made at the same time in Diyarbakir are thought to have successfully broken up this particular PKK cell. Evidence given by the suspects revealed that that they had first met up at the "Oncu School" in Diyarbakir, while preparing for university exams. Kenan Avci, as it turns out, had been a student in Mugla University's teaching program, though university officials say Avci's status had been on hold since last year.
Marmara and Istanbul Technical Universities
Meanwhile, suspects Enver Akcay and Levent Dondu have been revealed to be students in the teaching department at Marmara University, and Nusret Inci a student in the Electronics Department at Istanbul Technical University.
