The film about how Bodrum used to be, Hadi Gari Cumhur has just opened for general release in Turkey. However, residents in Bodrum saw it a week earlier, first at the gala opening and then in the local cinema. The gala was launched in true Bodrum tradition, just as if it were a circumcision or wedding party.

A noisy cortege of vehicles led by a traditional band and camel proceeded along the Bodrum harbor and then on to the cinema. Cars and jeeps carried the stars of the cast, Ersin Aycan and Merve İldeniz; plus the locals who became actors for parts or all of the film; and the leading man himself, the actor, director and screenwriter, Harun Özakıncı.

At the Gala party held in the heart of the Oasis shopping center that evening, Harun Özakıncı, stood on stage to thank people who had acted in or supported the creation of his first full-length film. The film was shot in different locations, in Bodrum and Bitez last year. Many local personalities had parts, including the former mayor of Bodrum, Mazlum Ağan.

The story is based on the tradition of family inheritance, where the girls were given the unproductive sandy shoreside land, while the boys inherited the agriculturally productive mandarin and olive groves. As tourism came to the Turkish coast, in Bodrum in the 70s and 80s, the girls of the families found themselves with the most prized land for building guesthouses and hotels. Özakıncı plays the lead role of Cumhur, who belatedly realizes the value of the land and tries to take it from his sister. Hadi Gari is an old Bodrum phrase meaning, "come on" or "get a move on."The film opened around Turkey on 22 May.
