BODRUM - The results of the annual Turkish Youth Chess Championships held at the end of January in Kemer, near Antalya brought good news to Bodrum.
There were three Bodrum contestants and all secured high places in the final rankings. Derme Kerigan finished third in the under 16 age group. Sevim Isparta finished third in the girls under 18 age group and Güliz Aydin made 11th place in the girls under 10 age group, in her second year at the championships.
Can Ertan who won first place in the under 18 age group last year as part of the Bodrum team, is now a student at Bosphorus University and too old for the championships. However Demre, Can, and Sevim can now all play in Turkey's 1st Division Chess League (the İş Bank League). Can Ertan will play with the Turkish Airlines team, and Demre and Sevim will play with the Middle East University team. Turkey’s top 16 teams are battling for the first ranks.
Chess only became part of the Turkish national curriculum in 2006 after an agreement was signed between the Education Ministry and the Chess Federation. According to the Federation, for the 2008-2009 school year nearly two million Turkish children have chosen chess as a school subject.
