ISTANBUL - New public transportation projects are being launched everyday and ’Haliç Motorboats Project’ is just one of them. Aiming to further utilize waterways, three new boats with the capacity for 600 passengers will soon be introduced.

Seeking an alternative to Istanbul’s burgeoning land traffic, the city’s ferry authority has announced three new boats will be built to accommodate tourists.

Ahmet Paksoy, the general manager of Istanbul Seabuses and Fast Ferries Inc, or İDO, said the boats were part of the "Haliç Motorboats Project."

Paksoy told the Anatolia news agency that they were working on many projects to further utilize waterways for increased urban transportation and the "Haliç Motorboats Project" was one such project.

He also said the current boats servicing the Bosphorus were obsolete and caused noise pollution. Paksoy said new and environmentally friendly ferries were needed to handle the ever-growing number of passengers. He added the Sütlüce Culture Center, which is to open soon, also caused İDO to conceive new projects. Paksoy said they wanted to introduce "ferries fit for Istanbul."

"The new boats will be aesthetically beautiful and offer passengers a great view from their open decks and high windows. They will be ecologically friendly and suitable for tourism, and will offer easy access for disabled people: they will be fit for Istanbul."

Newly designed boats cost 10 million euros

The three boats each have a capacity for 600 passengers and are being built at the Golden Horn Shipyard by Turkish engineers and workers. The ferries, similar to those used in Amsterdam and Venice, will cost 10 million euros and will operate between Üsküdar, Eyüp and Golden Horn. The new ferries will be in operation by the end of this year.

Paksoy said the boats were designed to be the same size as those presently running to enable them to sail under the Galata Bridge.

Paksoy added there were lots of motorboats in Istanbul, large and small, and the majority were an eyesore and a source of noise pollution. "This perfect project will eliminate all the negative aspects of boat travel. It will continue and be an example to the private sector. People’s expectations tend to rise when you set a good example. Istanbul needs these motorboats."
