ANKARA - The government last year spent less from its budget for big cities, according to official data. On the other hand, the government obtains most of its revenues from these industrialized cities, which include Ankara, Istanbul and İzmir
Despite Istanbul being the province that contributed the most to the Turkish economy last year, it acquired the smallest share from last year’s state budget. And Istanbul isn’t the only one that has contributed more than it got back.
The government has earned more than it has spent in 15 of 81 provinces last year, recording to calculations by the General Directorate of Public Accounts.
Ankara, Antalya, Bursa, Hatay, Mersin, Istanbul, İzmir, Kırklareli, Kocaeli, Muğla, Tekirdağ, Zonguldak, Kırıkkale, Yalova and Karabük are listed as the 15 cities whose income surpassed their expenses.
Istanbul put more than 77.2 billion Turkish Liras in the government's pocket last year. Meanwhile, the government's spending on Istanbul slightly surpassed 9.4 billion liras.
The strength of Kocaeli
Kocaeli, home to Tüpraş, Turkey's biggest energy company, and to Petkim, a Turkish petrochemicals maker, has provided the government with nearly 25.5 billion liras last year. The government collected 24.6 billion liras from Ankara and 16.5 billion liras from İzmir. Bursa put 4.6 billion liras in the government's pocket last year and Antalya provided 2.5 billion liras.
The government expenditure in Ankara totaled 14.2 billion liras last year. While İzmir received 4.4 billion liras from the government during the same period, Bursa received nearly 2 billion liras. The government provided nearly 1.7 liras for Antalya last year.
On the other hand, the government's earnings from the remaining 66 cities were much lower compared to its spending. The government spent 679.8 million liras on the southeastern Anatolian city of Hakkari, while the city was able to provide only 28.6 million liras in revenue last year.
The government, which obtained nearly 70.7 million liras in revenue from Siirt, spent a total of 452.2 million liras in the city. While spending for Bingöl added up to 424.1 million liras last year, the earnings of the government hardly reached 62.2 million liras. The government provided a little more than 469.9 million liras for Bitlis, while the city gave only 66.3 million to the government.
Although one-sixth of Turkey's population calls Istanbul home, last year the government made decided to spend the least amount of money on the city. Each Istanbul resident put an annual average of 6,142 liras in government's pocket, while the government spent only 719 liras per person living in the city.
Turkey’s capital Ankara, which is known as the city of civil servants, received 3,183 liras per capita from the government last year. On the other hand, each Ankara resident supplied the government with annual revenue of 5,511 liras. The government's annual per capita revenue from İzmir totaled 4,963 liras, while İzmir’s residents obtained only 188 liras per capita from the government.
Industrial corporations such as Tüpraş and Petkim located in Kocaeli provided the government with an average of 17,710 liras per capita last year. The government spending on this area totaled only 1,269 per capita during the same period.
