ISTANBUL - After seven years of success in the Spanish League, Villarreal striker Nihat Kahveci is set to return to his former club Beşiktaş, Turkish media reported yesterday.

The Turkcell Super League champion yesterday issued a statement saying that it had started talks with the Turkish international star, but media reports suggested that Kahveci was already set to return to Beşiktaş.

Daily Hürriyet wrote yesterday that Nihat and Beşiktaş had agreed on a yearly wage of 3.5 million euros, adding that club chairman Yıldırım Demirören had already made an agreement with Villarreal last week.

A member of the Beşiktaş youth system, Nihat was promoted to the Beşiktaş squad during coach John Toshack’s tenure in 1997. The Welshman was a clear admirer of Nihat’s abilities and acquired him in 2002 when he was coaching Spanish minnows Real Sociedad.

The striker was at the heart of Sociedad’s transition from a relegation battler to a title contender, scoring 58 goals in 133 appearances at the San Sebastian club.

Kahveci moved to Villarreal in 2006, where he scored 30 goals in 60 games during a period that is usually marred with injuries.

Beşiktaş also signed young left back İsmail Köybaşı from Gaziantepspor.
