ISTANBUL - A historic 4-2 rout in the Fortis Turkish Cup final gives Beşiktaş a boost in its bid for a trophy double, while pushing Fenerbahçe deeper into trouble. A brace by Bobo helps the Black Eagles earn a famous derby victory, and their eighth Turkish Cup. While its archrival is in the rose garden, Fenerbahçe is lying on more of a bed of thorns, with coach Aragones expected to leave in the next few days
Beşiktaş added a coveted trophy to its wonderful 2009 year with a 4-2 victory over
Fenerbahçe in the Fortis Turkish Cup final on Wednesday, pushing its rival into utter chaos.
Fenerbahçe failed to end its 26-year-drought in the cup, while Beşiktaş clinched its eighth Turkish Cup to come closer to all-time top performer Galatasaray, which has 14 trophies. Beşiktaş is the best performer in the competition in this decade, however, becoming the only team with three victories in the last 10 years after the final at the
Atatürk Stadium in İzmir.
The Black Eagles took the lead early in the game when attacking midfielder Yusuf Şimşek found the net from a long-range effort in the sixth minute. It was not the best of shots by the former Fenerbahçe man, but somehow changed the score, thanks to a blunder by goalkeeper Volkan Babacan.
High pressure
Fenerbahçe leveled the game in the 27th minute, when Daniel Güiza, who previously scored on both outings against Beşiktaş this season, tapped the ball in following a pass by Deivid De Souza.
The second half started with Beşiktaş applying high pressure on its archrival, and its efforts paid off with a fine strike by Bobo. The Brazilian shot outside the box in the 56th minute, with once again Volkan punished for poor positioning.
In the 73rd minute, it was fullback Gökhan Gönül who made the error. The Turkish international lost the ball to Şimşek on the edge of the Fenerbahçe box and had to watch him cross it for Bobo to make a nicely timed header to make it 3-1.
Fenerbahçe started going gung-ho in its attempt to cut the deficit, but left too much space for Beşiktaş to capitalize. Slovakian attacker Fillip Holosko dribbled through most of Fenerbahçe’s half in the 80th minute, played a one-two with Bobo, and then put the ball in the net to cap a night to remember for Beşiktaş.
However, Fenerbahçe had the final word, with the referee Bünyamin Gezer awarding a penalty for the Yellow Canaries. The television replays proved that it was not the best refereeing decision, as Beşiktaş goalkeeper Hakan Arıkan barely touched Güiza. Alex De Souza came in and converted the penalty anyway, but the goal was little consolation for Fenerbahçe, as it was clearly Beşiktaş’s night.
This football campaign seems to be Beşiktaş’s as well: the Turkish Cup victory helped the Black Eagles close in on a trophy double this year, as they are in a commanding position in the Turkcell Super League.
Coach Mustafa Denizli was proud of his team’s performance in two competitions. "We have been working hard for months to seize success in the league and the cup," said Denizli after the game.
Denizli said that his team could have won with a bigger margin. "This performance shows that Beşiktaş is a worthy winner," said the coach. "In the second half, we could have had an even bigger win if we could have finished well. That would be an unprecedented score in the final."
Striker Bobo was selected man of the match after scoring a brace of goals and providing an assist. "Bobo played very well and deserved this honor," said Denizli. "But I congratulate all of my players, they are all men of the match to me."
Beşiktaş needs to focus on its league games now, said Denizli. "It was an important achievement for us, but we still have a long marathon to run in the next 16 days," he explained. "We should not forget that we are on the brink of a bigger joy."
While Beşiktaş was high on winning the first trophy of the year, Fenerbahçe has hit rock bottom, ending the football season with empty hands. Already losing all hopes of a league title, the Turkish Cup was the last chance to end the season with something to show for it but Wednesday’s result proved that coach Luis Aragones’ one-year spell at the Yellow Canaries has brought nothing but misery for the team.
The Spanish coach did not comment after the game, and reports suggest that the Beşiktaş game may be his last game as Fener coach.
Aragones may leave
Chairman Aziz Yıldırım called Aragones’ agent Vicente Montes to Istanbul yesterday to start talks on how to end the Spaniard’s post, the daily Hürriyet reported. Aragones, who came on a three-million euro deal after leading Spain to the European Championship last summer, would be compensated with 3.5 million euros if he is fired, the daily said.
This defeat may not only end Aragones’ post, it may also harm chairman Yıldırım’s position, some columnists suggested. Yıldırım is expected to announce his decision today on whether he would run for Fener’s presidency for two more years. "Denizli has played a leading role in the rise of Aziz Yıldırım period," Mehmet Demirkol wrote in daily Milliyet yesterday, referring to the Fenerbahçe championship in 2001, while Denizli was at the helm. "He dealt the first blow of Yıldırım’s fall."
