The Belgian Court of Cassation will retry members of the far-left DHKP-C, listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey and some countries including the United States, who were acquitted in Belgium four months ago, the Anatolian Agency reported.

The Court of Cassation annulled the verdict of the court in Anvers which acquitted members of the DHKP-C in February 2008 and designated the DHKP-C a "terrorist organization, crime organization and gang".   Â

The Court of Cassation also said the DHKP-C members could also be tried in Belgium for the crimes that they committed in other countries.

On Feb. 7, 2008, the court in Anvers acquitted Dursun Karatas, Zerrin Sari, Sukriye Akar and Bahar Kimyongur, and sentenced Fehriye Erdal, Musa Asoglu and Kaya Saz to suspended jail terms ranging from 21 months to three years.

On Feb. 28, 2006, the Criminal Court in Bruges sentenced ten members of the DHKP-C including Erdal, Karatas, Asoglu, Saz, Kimyongur, Sari and Sukriye Akar Ozordulu to prison, the terms ranging from four to six years for crimes they committed in Belgium. The Gent Supreme Court of Appeals ratified and lengthened some of the sentences on Nov. 7, 2006.

Asoglu, Saz, Ozordulu and Kimyongur were in custody serving a prison sentence at that time, while Erdal, Karatas and Sari, who were under police surveillance, disappeared two days before the court decision.

Fehriye Erdal, a suspect in the murder of Turkish businessman Ozdemir Sabanci, Toyota-Sa DG Haluk Gorgun and his secretary Nilgun Hasefe, on Jan. 9, 1996, was arrested carrying a false passport in Belgium on Sept. 26, 1999.

The DHKP-C members were tried fro crimes including using false IDs, carrying weapons and explosives, being a member of a terrorist organization, planning terrorist attacks and collecting money by force.
