ISTANBUL - Swedish photographer Alexander Berg, the initiator of the One Shot project, is in Istanbul for his 'One Shot Istanbul' project as part of the Contemporary Istanbul Art Fair. The project consists of images taken with a large-format camera in just one frame, on just one sheet of film, with only one shot per subject
The fourth round of Contemporary Istanbul plans for further contribution to contemporary art in Turkey with the presence of Swedish photographer Alexander Berg as the architect of "One Shot of Istanbul."
For the project, which Berg has previously carried out in New York and Beijing, images will be taken on a large-format camera in just one frame, on one sheet of
film, with one shot per subject. Portrait sitters will be given the one-of-a-kind photograph for free. The project is especially unique because the film rolls used by Berg are no longer being produced.
The artist is calling on everyone who lives in Istanbul and sees him or herself as a part of the city’s color to join in the project. These one-shot frames will make up the photos for his Istanbul project.
The photo shoots will continue until Jan. 18 from 1:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. in a photography studio located in Rumeli Han on Istiklal Avenue. The photographs will then be displayed in an exhibition.
A collective photo
The importance of the One Show project is that the photos shot in New York and Beijing do not only reflect individuals, but they also create a collective that can be seen as the "Face of New York" or the "Face of Beijing." The project also reveals cosmopolitan structures, common points of New York, Beijing and Istanbul.
The One Shot project will result in a portrait of the west, from New York, the east, from Beijing, and the meeting point of west and the east, Istanbul. The resulting images will be on display in an exhibition part of the Contemporary Istanbul Art Fair in September.
One Shot by Alexander Berg
One Shot began in Times Square, New York City, where Alexander Berg was awarded space in both 2003 and 2006 to create an open studio. In One Shot, Berg invited people off the street to sit for a portrait session for free that he shot on his large-format camera.
In New York, he created over 850 portraits in just under two months that were shown in a solo exhibition at DKNY on Madison Avenue as part of a fundraiser for the Whitney Museum. He was then invited to take part in the Dangdai International Arts Festival 2007, bringing One Shot to Beijing.
As part of a residency at the Paris Beijing Photo Gallery, Berg exhibited work from One Shot New York and created more than 370 portraits in the Old Factory 798 Art District in Beijing.
Berg actively encourages participation of individuals photographed in the One Shot project. They discuss content, mood and lighting to best realize their combined vision, while this collaboration gives Berg a way to really meet the subject, finding a way to capture their presence in just one moment and in one frame. It is common practice for photographers to shoot numerous rolls of film. For Berg and, knowing that only one sheet of film will be exposed creates a heightened awareness in the studio and intensifies the bond between them.
