Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader Deniz Baykal received a vote of confidence in the 12th Extraordinary Congress of CHP, which took place in a hotel out of the down town of Ankara, behind gendarme barricades. 781 delegates gave their consent to “Continue with Baykal”.Baykal , who critisized the opposition in CHP by saying “Abscess piled up, so there is a need to confront”, spoke harshly in the Congress. He claimed that the counsellor of a deputy belonging to the party opposition, had demanded information and document about himself from a CIA-related firm in Mosoul.Media and audience were denied entry to the congress which gave a vote of confidence to Baykal. In his inaugural speech, Baykal said, “I will not leave CHP to the raiders, who express their ideas in the streets and wave placards in front of the headquarters.”He said, “I will obey the inner party democracy but I will also do what is required against those who violate the principles, ethics and discipline of the party. CHP came to a point of differentiation on this issue and it became necessary to convene this congress. We will do everything needed, in order to prevent this scene from re-occurring. I expect respect from you as an elected secretary. Those who say “Yes to CHP, no to Baykal”; what will you do if I get a vote of confidence in this congress? You are doing things which are humiliating our party.”
