KAYSERİ - The Kayseri City Tobacco Control Commission has banned smoking at bus stops, in passages, office entrances with awnings, corridors and other shady areas.

The council has agreed on an interpretation of Law 5,727, enacted with the aim of preventing the encouragement of smoking among children and reducing cigarette smoke for people who do not, that forbids smoking in indoor places except houses.

The term indoor covers bus stops, passages, office entrances with awnings, office corridors and walls with sun shade, so it is forbidden to smoke in these areas, the council reported.

As part of the law, smoking is forbidden in Kayseri’s Underground Bazaar, Kazancılar and the Grand Bazaar areas. Additionally, restaurants inside business centers should obey the council law prior to July 19 when the new smoking law will be passed and forbid smoking indoors in Turkey.

Many business centers do not obey the current rules and people smoke indoors in offices. Business centers should put up announcements reading "smoking is forbidden," said council members. Starting next week, inspections will begin and those found not to be obeying the ban will face legal action.

The council’s decision was made after a meeting with the Health Ministry, Education Ministry, Police Department, Metropolitan Municipality, County Police, Erciyes University, Toraks, Temperance Union and Military Hospital.

The newly implemented smoking ban, Law 5,727, allows people to smoke outside, while it forbids smoking in indoor public places. Those that break the ban face a 62-lira fine.

The ban in health, educational and public facilities in Turkey came into effect May 19, 2008. Prior to passing the main law, on Jan. 3, 2008, Turkey passed Law 4,207, which aimed to protect citizens, particularly pregnant women, the elderly and children from the damaging effects of smoking. The smoking ban is expected to hurt bars and restaurants all around Turkey over the next year.
