ANKARA - Contrary to the global trend, motor vehicle production in Turkey has been rising.

Based on the International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers, or OICA's, figures, global automotive roduction dropped by 3.7 percent in 2008 compared to a year earlier. Meanwhile, Turkey produced nearly 1.15 million vehicles last year, which helped it grab 15th spot in the list of global countries with high motor vehicle production figures.

In 2008, Turkey single handedly assembled 16 of every 1,000 vehicles produced around the world.

The number of vehicles produced in Turkey rose 4.3 percent in 2008 compared to a year earlier. Some 1.15 million vehicles were produced in Turkey last year. Some 621,567 of that total figure were passenger cars, while some 470,557 were light commercial vehicles. Commercial vehicles made up 36,800 of that figure, while 18,186 were buses and minibuses.

Global figures show that 70.5 million motor vehicles were produced last year. Some 52.64 million of the total figure were passenger cars, while 13.6 million were light commercial vehicles. Some 3.59 million vehicles produced last year were commercial vehicles, while 702,000 were buses, according to OICA data.

Leaders of the market

Japan maintained it global leadership in auto production last year, by assembling 11.56 million vehicles. China followed Japan with 9.35 million vehicles. The United States was third place in the global list with 8.71 million vehicles. The automotive industry in the United States contracted 19.3 percent last year compared to a year earlier based on its production. The United States had ranked second on the global list a year earlier with its production of 11.26 million vehicles.

Australia experienced the biggest motor vehicle production decline. Auto production in the country dropped 30 percent in 2008 compared to a year earlier. The country was able to produce only 150,000 vehicles last year.

Meanwhile, Indonesia saw the biggest increase in its motor vehicle production with 46 percent. The country managed to increase its production capacity to 600,000 last year from 2007’s 411,000.
