ÇANAKKALE - The old stone houses and beautiful nature around Yeşilyurt village in Çanakkale’s Ayvacık district draws the interest of people who want to get away from the stress of everyday life. Visitors from İzmir and Istanbul are also organizing one-day trips to the village.
Yeşilyurt village is located in the 40-kilometer slope of the Kaz Mountains, which reaches from west to east. The village looks out over the Aegean Sea. According to mythology, the world’s first beauty contest was held in this village. King Priamos’ son Paris had to choose between Helen, Athena and Aphrodite and he decided that Aphrodite should be the beauty queen.
The area was home to Lycians, Persians and Romans and was an important passageway for the Ionians.
The Çepni, a part of the Ghuzz Tribe, first founded the village in 1355 and called it Büyük Çetmi. A short while later, the younger brother of the village’s governor founded another village and called it Küçük Çetmi. Today these two villages still face each other across a valley in the Kaz.
In Büyük Çetmi, Turks and Greeks lived together for hundreds of years until the 1924 population exchange. The ground of the church can still be seen in the neighborhood. Local legend says Greek artisans helped build the mosque of the village. The village’s name was changed to Yeşilyurt in 1970.
