Austrian coalition to hold public vote on Turkey's EU bid

Austrian foreign minister said the coalition partners in the government had decided to call for a referendum on Turkey's membership in the European Union, if the bloc greenlights the country's accession.

"Coalition parties have agreed to go on for a referendum if Turkey's accession talks are concluded in favor of a decision to prepare a membership agreement," Germany's Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung quoted Ursula Plassnik as saying.
"And they have a good reason for that: Turkey's membership will bring a new dimension to the European integration and the EU," she said.
Austria is one the most opponent countries to Turkey's EU accession process, despite Turkey's role as an important energy route to Europe.
