Australia beckons Turkey with film

ANKARA - A recent addition to the repertoire of Turkey’s movie theatres, the movie "Australia," will likely bring the geographically distant country of the same name that bit closer to Turkey, according to the Australian ambassador to Turkey.
"My Turkish friends here keep telling me how far away Australia is. It is true that it takes a bit time to get to Australia. But, I hope the film, which showcases the beauty of the Australian landscape, will encourage people to go there and have a closer look at Australia by themselves," Ambassador Peter Leo Doyle told the Hurriyet Daily News & Economic Review.
Distinguished crowd watched the film
Doyle was speaking at a special screening of the Australian movie held Wednesday in Ankara hosted by the Australian Embassy. A large and distinguished crowd, including many ambassadors, diplomats and renowned faces of the media, were guests of the event. The movie is the most expensive Australian film ever made costing an estimated $100 million.
The movie depicts little-known aspects of Australia’s extraordinary natural environment, history and indigenous culture, so Doyle thinks the movie is also likely to contribute to tourism in his home country.
Stating that Australia had a strong filmmaking tradition, he said: "There are many unique things peculiar to Australia in the film, such as the wild open spaces and the Australian Aboriginal culture and heritage. Many foreign people will find these very attractive.
"I think the film has something for everybody and I hope people will like it. I hope it will have positive effects on Australian tourism."
Directed by an Australian, Baz Luhrmann, and featuring Aussie actors Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman, "Australia" is an epic tale of adventure, transformation and love, set in the Australian outback in the 1930s and early 1940s
