Attention, road closed ahead

ISTANBUL - After leading Turkish labor unions announced Thursday that they would gather in "reasonable numbers" to hold May Day celebrations in Istanbul’s Taksim Square, the city governorship announced new arrangements for public transportation in the area.
Starting from 5:30 a.m. today, the metro line between Şişhane, Taksim and Mecidiyeköy will not be operating, although it will run between Mecidiyeköy and Atatürk Oto Sanayi, the last stop, reported Turkish television channel NTV.
The nostalgic trams, called funiculars, that operates on Istiklal Street between Kabataş and Taksim and between the Kadıköy and Moda districts on the Asian side of Istanbul will not be operating today either.
Besides the trams and the funicular, the ferries operated by Istanbul Fast Ferries Co., or İDO, between Kadıköy, Beşiktaş and the Princes’ Islands will not run after 8 a.m. Service to these ferry ports will be made from other locations that will be determined by the police.
Buses operated by the Istanbul Public Transportation Authority, or İETT, will not stop at Taksim Square, the expected Istanbul hub for May Day demonstrations.
In Ankara, the May Day gathering will be held in Sıhhiye Square and demonstrators will meet in front of the train station building. Starting from 12 p.m., traffic will be stopped on Ankara’s Talatpaşa Boulevard, Atatürk Boulevard and the Osmanlı crossroad that runs toward the Kızılay district. The Sıhhiye metro stop will also be closed. There will be 6,500 policemen working to provide security in the streets.
The police and municipalities have announced decisions to ensure that public transportation will be back on track and on schedule by midday.
