The attack took place in Iskandiriyah, a town 40 kilometers (25 miles) south of Baghdad, as Shiite pilgrims flocked to the holy city of Karbala for a major religious ceremony.

"Thirty pilgrims were killed by a suicide bomber," Alaa al-Husseini, a police lieutenant from the nearby city of Hilla, told AFP.

Another police source said around 50 people were wounded.

Captain Mohammed al-Awadi of the police force in Babil, of which Hilla is the capital, said most of those killed were women and children.

He said the suicide bomber had hidden her explosives under an abaya, the traditional head-to-toe black garment, and blew herself up among a crowd of women and children just after midday (0900 GMT).

Hundreds of thousands of Shiites are travelling to the holy city of Karbala for Arbaeen, a ceremony to mark 40 days after the Ashura anniversary of the killing of Imam Hussein by Sunni caliph Yazids armies in AD 680.

Friday's attack came the day after eight pilgrims were killed and more than 50 wounded in a bomb attack near Karbala’s revered Imam Hussein shrine.
