ISTANBUL - An interactive presentation to raise awareness on the protection of water resources and its meaning in the world is on display at the Museum of Natural History and Science the Ayazağa campus of Istanbul Technical University. The event was launched as part of the 5th Water Forum
The immense feeling of discovering something new and important will accompany those who enter the Museum of Natural History and Science, located in the Ayazağa campus of Istanbul Technical University to visit its current exhibition.
The venue hosts an exposition launched as a part of the 5th Water Forum, which was held in Istanbul in March. "H2O=Life" is an interactive presentation raising awareness on the protection of water resources and its meaning in the world will remain on display until June 14.
The exhibition, organized for the first time by the American Museum of Natural History in New York and the Science Museum in St. Paul, Minnesota was brought to Istanbul by the United Nations Development Program and the Coca Cola Company. The event was not only directly associated with the Water Forum, but also with regional partnership project "Every Drop Matters," which aims to increase access to safe drinking water by facilitating the use of environment-friendly industrial technologies and promoting responsible water resource management through awareness-raising activities in many countries.
Family entertainment
To reach as many audiences as possible, the exposition is going to travel the world and be presented on all continents by 2011. One may consider visiting the museum with children, as their education is emphasized in the exhibition. The ideas are explained in the simplest possible way, so the youngest visitors can understand the issues not only by watching the photos and videos, but also touching the exhibits or making them work. The "experimental" elements of the show are easily recognizable through the white hand sign and short explanation "how does it work."
The exhibition is divided into four parts, each of them presenting water from a different perspective: scientific, environmental, socio-cultural and artistic. All of them underline the fact that water is not a renewable, but unique and precious resource, only 1 percent of which is available for human use. Interactive installations, such as a globe-shaped screen, demonstrate how increasing environmental pollution endangers drinking water. The exhibition identifies ways to rectify the situation, suggesting the use of wind, solar, and tidal power instead of dams, which have proven to be more harmful than beneficial to the environment. Visitors have a chance to understand the dam system through a model shown on display.
Nowadays at least 1.2 billion people lack access to safe drinking water. Effective management of water resources is of the utmost importance as the resources are becoming scarce day by day. The issue is especially close to the inhabitants of Istanbul. Before the summer season starts and lack of water will be again among the most common problems of the city, visiting the presentation can be relevant in terms of changing old habits.
The exhibition is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekends. Tickets priced 5 and 10 Turkish Liras can be purchased at Biletix. For more information visit www.susergisi.com.
