DENVER - The Denver Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony tied a National Basketball Association record Wednesday as he scored 33 points in the third quarter of Wednesday's 116-105 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Anthony had nine points at halftime, but exploded in the third period to tie San Antonio star George Gervin's league record for most points in a quarter. He also broke the Nuggets' previous franchise mark of 32 points held by David Thompson.
Gervin's scoring outburst came in the second quarter at New Orleans on April 9, 1978. "My shot was going," said Anthony, whose 45 points for the game were four shy of his career high. "I felt good out there."
Speechless
"I can't put it into words," added Anthony, who said he didn't know how many points he had scored in the third period until he heard it on the public address system. "It was a good night. Records are made to be broken, and no disrespect to David, but it was my turn tonight."
Anthony scored all but seven of Denver's 40 third-quarter points, connecting on everything from drives to the basket to 3-pointers. He was 12-of-15 from the field in the period and also added five rebounds. "He was hitting shots out of his mind," said Timberwolves rookie Kevin Love. "I don't think any of them even hit the rim. When he gets going like that, he's like Kobe or LeBron." Denver had scored just 44 in the whole first half and trailed by 12 at the interval. By the fourth quarter, it led 84-78. Denver used an 18-4 run to start the second half to tie the game, 60-60, with 6:22 to go in the quarter and finally took a one-point edge with 5:58 to go in the third, its first lead since early in the opening frame.
"We needed a push, we needed some energy and we had to bring our own tonight," Anthony said. "We were embarrassed with how we played in the first half."
Anthony also pulled down 11 rebounds to notch his 10th double-double of the season. "It was a breakout game," Denver coach George Karl said. "Carmelo had been struggling with his game all year."
Bad habits
Randy Foye and Al Jefferson each scored 26 points for the Timberwolves, who lost the seventh straight game and the second in the two games since Kevin McHale took over as coach.
"We've got some bad habits," McHale said. "We miss a shot and slap our hands and then we don't get back on defense. Our effort was good, we just have to keep working to get better."
