ANTALYA - Hoping to attract more tourists interested in ornithology, Antalya plans to stage a festival devoted to birds.

An academic at the Akdeniz University Biology Department, Hakan Kara ardıç, says that the western city is suitable for ornithology, or the study of birds, but needs more promotion to attract more visitors interested in birds.

"There are many rare species here that are not in Europe, so the importance of this place should be better known," Karaardıç said. Karaardıç pointed out the spur-winged plover (Vanellus spinosus), which is under threat of extinction in the world, but continues to breed in Turkey.

"There are about 30 couples mating in this area, and it is important for them to be protected," he said of the Boğazkent district. "We plan to organize a spur-winged plover festival here, where many environmentalists will come and be able to observe many bird species."
