ISTANBUL - Pirates have hijacked another Turkish cargo ship in the Gulf of Aden, a global maritime watchdog said yesterday. The Turkish cargo ship "M/V Boğaziçi Harikası" was hijacked Tuesday in the Gulf of Aden by a gang of pirates who fired automatic weapons from two speed boats, said an AFP report yesterday. The ship belongs to the Isko Denizcilik company in Istanbul.

"They were armed with RPGs. They opened fire at the ship and then boarded it. The ship was heading to Europe from the Middle East," Noel Choong, head of the International Maritime Bureau piracy reporting centre in Kuala Lumpur told AFP.

Two other ships belonging to Turkish maritime companies have been under seizure by pirates in the Gulf of Aden in recent months. The cargo ship "Ya-Sa Neslihan" owned by YA-SA maritime company has been under control of pirates for 47 days, while the other ship, "Karagol," owned by YDC maritime company was seized by pirates 33 days ago. Somali pirates pirates armed with rocket-propelled grenades and automatic weapons also boarded a Malaysian tug on Tuesday, Choong said. The tug was heading to Malaysia from the Middle East, he added.

Choong said in three other incidents last week, Somali pirates attempted to hijack a Singapore tanker, an Italian cargo ship and a Greek ship. Meanwhile, the UN Security Council on Tuesday unanimously adopted a resolution for the first time authorizing international land operations against armed pirates sheltering in Somalia.
